Feature: Does Your Rolex Stop Working When You Die?

We all love a myth or two, it’s why things like old wives’ tales exist and why, in the modern age, the internet is abuzz with conspiracy theories galore. Why Are Watches Always Set To 10:10?

There are many theories behind why watches are set at 10:10, from smiling dials to the timing of famous deaths such as Martin Luther King—although King was declared dead at 7:05pm. Compared to the conspiracies, the truth is a little more, well, logical … or maybe disappointing? 10:10 happens to display the watch dial in the clearest way possible, with no overlapping of hands or covering of brand names.

Do Rolex Watches Stop Working When You Die?

It’s a spooky thought, that your wristwatch will stop ticking when your own heart stops beating—it’s almost a little sweet, like your watch can’t go on without you. The truth behind the matter isn’t quite so sweet or spooky, though, but far more rational. For a manual watch that relies on movement to keep it going, the owner’s passing will stop the watch from ticking within a few hours of death—and that’s about as sentimental as it gets, sadly.

Does An Orange Dial Provide The Best Visibility Underwater?

While many watch brands have created bright neon dials that are undeniably eye catching, there’s little evidence to suggest a gaudy dial will help you tell the time underwater. In fact, red shades often fade underwater at around 15 feet, shortly tailed by orange, which turns grey. Unless it’s a florescent orange, of course, which would continue to glow at great depths.
