Far from the ceramics that are commonly used to make flowerpots and coffee cups, watchmakers have been using and developing hardier versions of this material for a while now, providing benefits like being scratch-proof and resistant to the elements. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at five ceramic watches in a slick and rather gothic all-black colourway—these are some cool watches, believe us!
TAG Heuer Carrera CAR2A90.FT6071
This is a cool take on the classic TAG Heuer Carrera, one of the brand’s most popular models. This black ceramic piece looks even cooler thanks to that skeletonised dial, plus, flip it over and you can admire its movement via the open caseback. Still a racing chronograph at heart, this Carrera features three sub dials at 12, 6 and 9 o’clock, as well as a date window at 4 o’clock—although, we’re not sure they’re as legible as more traditional Carrera models.
Bell and Ross BRS Black Ceramic
Featuring Bell and Ross’s signature square case, this rugged looking timepiece is great for all occasions thanks to its colour—black goes with everything, right? To make sure the time can be easily read, though, the hour markers, hands and date display almost glow against the dark dial. The rubber strap only adds to the action-man aesthetic of this Bell and Ross making it a comfortable choice for those on an adventure.
Rado DiaStar R15609172
Now this watch from Rado really stuck to the brief, it’s all-black and made entirely of ceramic—that’s the case and bracelet. In fact, the DiaStar is considered the first ever scratch-proof watch made from ceramic derived from tungsten—a type of metal. Because the ceramic bracelet and pared-down design of the dial, this watch reminds us of Chanel’s classic J-12 line that’s become a popular watch collection from a huge fashion house. Although, if you opt for the DiaStar you can admire the Rado Calibre 658 through the open caseback.
Hublot Big Bang 341.CX.134.RX
It’s no surprise that the self-professed “artists of fusion”, Hublot, are on this list. Not a stranger to experimentation, it was the first watchmaker to put a natural rubber strap on a watch. Among said experimentation, Hublot has dedicated much of its resources to create hard-wearing and colourful ceramics and put them into its watches. This limited-edition Big Bang features both a ceramic case—of course—and a rubber strap, making it a double whammy!
Panerai Radiomir Manual PAM00292
One of Panerai’s most renowned models, the Radiomir has proven itself as a watch geared up for action after it was made for and used by the Italian Navy in the 1940s. Now, though, it looks fit for fashionistas in this all-black exterior. Panerai’s iconic cushion-shaped case in black ceramic has never looked so good, plus, those white hour markers and hands make this piece extra legible, especially for underwater use.
